Primary Elections
A primary election is held when a political party needs to decide between multiple candidates for the next general election (the next general election will be held on November 8, 2022). For example, if a party has several qualified applicants in a contest, a primary election may determine the strongest candidate.
Since each party of the two-party system has to decide on whether they want to hold a primary, there may not be a primary election. There is also the chance that only one party will want to hold a primary, or the chance of a dual primary, which would include both parties on separate ballots.
In the case of a dual primary, a Virginian voter must choose to vote either the Democratic or the Republican ballot. Per Virginia law, no voter may vote for the candidates of more than one party ballot.
