The walkway system in Fairfax County consists of sidewalks, trails and pedestrian bridges, along with their associated steps, handrails, ADA ramps or signs.
Maintenance:
Sidewalks in the public street right-of-way (i.e., alongside public roads) generally are maintained either by the Virginia Department of Transportation 1-800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623), TTY 711 or the county Maintenance & Stormwater Management Division (703-877-2800, TTY 711). Sidewalks along private roads are maintained by the property owner.
Maintenance of trails (generally asphalt, stone dust, wood chip or natural surface) and pedestrian bridges may fall under different authorities for example VDOT, Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, Fairfax County Public Schools, Fairfax County Park Authority, the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority, or private property owners.
